PL leader proposes to compensate for exemption from IR with comb in Bolsa Familia

The PL leader in the House, Cavalcantesuggested, in an interview with CNNthat the Expansion of the income tax exemption range (IR) Be compensated with a comb in the Bolsa Familia program. The opposition presented a bill proposing the exemption for income of up to $ 10,000, while the government defends the ceiling of $ 5,000.

The proposal bumps into the need for fiscal compensation, since the exemption for rent of up to $ 10,000 would have an estimated impact on R $ 35 billion in the collection. The government intends to balance the loss with an “effective minimum tax” for taxpayers who earn over $ 50,000 per month. Already the PL defends a cut of spending, aiming alleged fraud in the social program.

“Either the IBGE data is wrong or there are many people improperly receiving. Through this comb in Bolsa Familia and one or another cut in ministries, it is possible to pay the exemption, ”said Cavalcante.

The deputy questions the number of beneficiaries of the program (54 million Brazilians), considering incompatible with the unemployment rate of 6.4%, equivalent to 7 million people, according to IBGE.

Last week, the federal government had excluded 1.1 million Bolsa Familia beneficiaries since 2023, as part of a registration review process to eliminate irregularities. Currently, 20.5 million families are served, below 21.6 million registered in the last month of management Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

The opposition offensive pressures the government, which may face criticism if it rejects the expansion of the tax exemption. At the same time, the proposal challenges the Ministry of Finance, which seeks to increase collection to reduce the deficit and meet the fiscal target. The clash should gain strength in Congress in the coming weeks.
