Milei threatens Mercosur’s departure and says block has enriched Brazilians

As soon as he took over, Milei closed Screen, the largest state news agency in Latin America, ending at least 700 jobs.

Defense of economic policy

Milei also took the opportunity in Congress to argue that in one year he fulfilled 75% of campaign promises. He highlighted the reduction of inflation and mocked the opposition.

“Since April, the economy has not stopped growing” (…) “even if it donates the union by the platform (platform means money in Spanish), as they are called now.” The official name of the Peronian party is union for the homeland.

The president classified his economic policy as the most successful in Argentina’s history. According to him, the reduction of spending fell on the “caste” and not about the most needy – by contracting the reality in which the country lives, with high rates of poverty and indigence, reduced subsidies and mass layoffs in the public system.

In the speech, he argued that poverty dropped during the first year of management, falling from 56% to 33%. The data were credited to a study by the Torcuato di Tella University, which, according to the president, would be methodologically similar to Indec, the country’s institute of statistics. “The number translates into 10 million people who came out of the poverty line,” he said.
