Trump confirms 25% tariff to Canada and Mexico: ‘There is no margin of maneuver’
The US president said in the Truth Social network last week that drugs were still entering the US “to very high and unacceptable levels.” Above all, Trump referred to Fentanil, a synthetic opioid that kills thousands of overdose people a year in the United States.
The Republican also accuses the neighbors of not doing enough to stop irregular migration. Canada and Mexico are two US partner countries in the T-MEC free trade treaty.
Canada Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly evaluated tariffs as an “existential threat.” Joly also pointed out that “thousands of jobs are at stake” in the country.
Mexico president Claudia Sheinbaum asks “courage, serenity and patience”, but warns that the country is prepared. “Whatever the decision, we have a plan,” said the agent on Monday, in her usual morning press conference.
Mexico delivered to the US drug traffickers last week. It has also sent thousands of military to the border in recent weeks, among other measures, in an attempt to prevent the imposition of tariffs.
