Man died at the scene. “We tried to transport him to a hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries,” Scepanovic added.

Understand the case

A fight would have preceded the attack. According to the police chief, the man argued with a customer at the establishment with whom he had spent much of the day drinking alcoholic beverages.

Suspect went home, grabbed a pistol and returned to the restaurant. There, he shot four people. He then went to three other addresses, where he killed members of the Martinovic family, a relative and two children, aged 10 and 13.

The government decreed three days of mourning in the small country of 630,000 inhabitants. Police authorities also stated that the shooting attack was not motivated by “confrontations between organized criminal groups”.

Mass shootings are relatively rare in Montenegro. Despite this, in 2022, 11 people, including two children and a gunman, were killed in a mass shooting in the country, and six others were injured.
