Mangione is also charged with terrorism, but that is a New York State charge. Therefore, according to the BBC, there is no possibility of the death penalty at the state level.

Protesters gathered outside the federal courthouse to criticize the charges against the suspect. One woman carried a sign reading “Luigi freed us”, while another said insurance lobbyists “line politicians’ pockets”.

Terrorism accusation

Luigi Mangione was charged by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office with the crime on Tuesday (17). He was charged with first-degree murder.

This class of crimes is the most severe among attacks on life in the United States justice system.. For a person to be convicted of this type of offense, they must have killed with intent, have premeditated and planned the crime and/or have “negligence” with human life. If convicted, Mangione could face up to life in prison.
