The Court of Justice of São Paulo ordered the city of São Paulo to explain the increase in fares on municipal buses, determined by the Municipal Traffic and Transport Council (CMTT) on the 26th. R$5 in January.

The city hall has until Monday afternoon (30) to provide clarifications. The court decision partially accepts an action by opposition parliamentarians, however does not prohibit or suspend the increaseas requested.

The authors of the action question the lack of discussion on the topic in public hearings.

According to the judge’s decision Bruno Cassiolato“despite the carrying out of the technical study, the meeting in which it was prepared and supported must be held in accordance with the legal determinations that can provide transparency, security and popular participation”.

When contacted, the city hall said it had not been notified of the decision. “When this happens, it will take the appropriate legal measures, within the judicial deadline.”

“On the other hand, it is worth highlighting that the popular authors’ request to suspend the effects of the CMTT meeting on 12/26/2024 was not accepted by the Court. A period of 48 hours was granted (from notification) to present responses to the councilor’s letter sent on 12/27/2024 to the Municipal Mobility and Traffic Secretariat (SMT)”, he added.

During the CMTT meeting, members approved the adjustment, as the current tariff values are equivalent to those of 2019, the year of the last adjustment. The cost to maintain the system is approximately R$1 billion, according to data presented.

Among the arguments used by SPTrans to convince them of the need for the adjustment is the number of users benefiting from the free payment. From 2019 to 2024, paying passengers always represent at least half of the passengers.
