COP30 will be decisive for climate governance actions, says Ambassador

In a speech at an informal meeting at the UN General Assembly in New York, Ambassador André Correa do Lago said on Wednesday (5) that the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30) in Belém (PA) should represent a decisive transition from the negotiation phase to effective action and implementation efforts.

“The task we have ahead is to reinforce climate governance and provide agility, preparation and anticipation in both decision making and implementation,” he said.

According to the ambassador, Brazil expects COP30 to provide a decisive boost in three dimensions:

  • protect and expand the institutional legacy of the climate convention,
  • connect negotiations and political decisions to real life and
  • accelerate the implementation of the Paris Agreement through structural solutions and initiatives that go beyond multilateral climate action, including global governance and financial architecture.

For Corrêa do Lago, this includes the delivery of nationally determined contributions (NDCs), which had the deadline extended after low delivery within the deadline, closed in February.

“National leaders should honor their determination to pursue efforts to limit increased temperature to 1.5 degrees. Human lives depend on it. Future jobs depend on it. Healthy environments depend on it, ”he said

The ambassador also highlighted the success of the Troika, which established cooperation between United Arab Emirates, Azerbaijan and Brazil, presidents of COP28 and successors. Among the advances made with these leaders, he highlighted the global carbon balance, which had its first edition delivered during COP28 and is a transparency mechanism provided for in the Paris Agreement to evaluate the progress of long -term goals.

“GST is our Guide to Mission 1.5º C, in our collective project to implement the view of the convention (climate) and the Paris Agreement, the vision of reinforcing the global response to the threat of climate change. All this always in the context of sustainable development and efforts to eradicate poverty, ”he said.

For Corrêa do Lago, the reinforcement of multilateralism instruments is the path that will make it possible to reverse dangerous human interference to the planet.

“The choice of the General Assembly as my first official trip outside Brazil is not coincidence, but a clear sign that the defense of multilateralism will be at the heart of the Brazilian presidency of this COP. Respect for science would be another pillar of our presidency, ”he said.

Before speaking at the meeting convened and led by the president of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Philemon Yang, Corrêa do Lago gave an interview to the UN Newsin which he talked about the importance of the Amazon to host global negotiations at this time of climate urgency.

For the ambassador, COP30 should bring a better view of the necessary development model for the region, without a romantic look at the forest and highlighting the central importance of the ecosystem in combating climate change.
