Federal government promises to charge Enel compensation to customers who were left without electricity

The federal government intends to charge Enel, an energy concessionaire in the state of São Paulo, to reimburse customers for losses caused as a result of the power outage that still affects more than 400,000 properties in the capital of São Paulo and the metropolitan region.

According to the National Consumer Secretary, Wadih Damousthere must be a meeting between representatives of the federal government and Procon-SP to define how this would be done and how consumers could request compensation.

Damous also reported that the government has already notified São Paulo city hall to obtain clarification on the tree pruning service in the city.

In a letter published this Monday (14), signed by the general director of Aneel, Sandoval Feitosa, the agency states that “it has been systematically monitoring the provision of services by Enel SP”

“We will try to map and get an idea of ​​the damage caused”, said the secretary, in a press conference, after a meeting at Palácio do Planalto, this Monday (14).

“These electricity concession companies always, in events like this, present this reason for the delay in restoration (of light), which are the trees that fall on the wiring. So, we want to know from the city of São Paulo if it has a mapping of this risk, what measures it has taken and will take in relation to this, if it has carried out pruning, as required by law, with the frequency required”, said Damous .

“We are notifying Enel today to have a diagnosis of Friday’s storm, so that it can present the number of affected consumers, which service channels it is offering and what the emergency plan is.”

Chaos in SP

The power outage occurred after a strong storm hit Greater São Paulo on Friday night, with winds of more than 100 km/h, which caused flooding and destruction throughout the city. At the time, more than 2.1 million users were left without electricity.

In a statement, Enel reiterated that it continues to work day and night to restore service for everyone. “Since Friday night, when rain accompanied by winds of more than 100 km/h hit the concession area, the company immediately activated its emergency plan. As of 8am on Sunday, around 1.2 million customers had their service restored. In some cases, the work to restore power is more complex, as it involves the reconstruction of entire sections of the network.”
