Fire fighting in Brazil will not be affected by US decision

THE Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) said on Tuesday (11), by means of a note, that the suspension of the financial aid of United States (USA) does not generate a direct impact on the fight against forest fires in Brazil.

The demonstration occurs after the decision of President Donald Trump, who suspended for 90 days, by decree, any international assistance, “for evaluation of programmatic efficiency and coherence with US foreign policy.”

Among the actions funded by the US government in Brazil is the Forest Management and Fire Prevention Program, executed by the United States Forest Service with Ibama and other Brazilian bodies such as the National Foundation of Indigenous Peoples (Funai) and the Institute Chico Mendes of Biodiversity Conservation. The funds come from a partnership between the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

According to Ibama, the decision generates technical losses “due to the interruption of some actions that could contribute to the restructuring of Brazilian institutions, particularly in terms of training of professionals”, highlights the note.

According to the Brazilian agency, the activities and meetings already scheduled are still evaluated by the institutions involved in the program and are being maintained or rescheduled at the discretion of each agency, without the participation of the United States Forest Service.

Ibama points out that the actions to prevent and combat forest fires in the country “are executed with resources from the Union budget and do not depend on external resources.”
