Gleisi: left “will continue to be massacred” if it doesn’t regulate social media

The national president of the PT, federal deputy Gleisi Hoffmanndefended the regulation of social networks and stated that the left “will continue to be massacred” because of the algorithm of virtual platforms.

The statement was given this Monday (28), at the headquarters of the PT national directory, in Brasília (DF), after a meeting of the Executive and the party’s parliamentary group.

At the time, Gleisi admitted that the party had expectations of better results in this year’s municipal elections.

“Of course you will ask: the PT needs to modernize and expand its discourse. I hear that a lot. It’s true, we need to modernize and expand our discourse, without losing sight of the principles and program that brought us here”, he stated.

XP’s chief economist recalls that many of the winning parties in this Sunday’s election make up the base of the government in Brasília

“There is a base that came with us here and faced the worst moments, when we were in the worst moments. Don’t forget that we are going to expand”, continued Gleisi.

Next, the PT member spoke about the party’s communication with the population.

“They also talk a lot about communication. I think we have made progress in our communication, speaking as a party and about the campaign in 2022. But it is not easy to compete on social networks the way they are positioned”, he said.

“I don’t know if you saw an interview with Felipe Neto in which he said: I don’t really agree with the left and the way they communicate, but the problem is that the left will continue to be massacred on the internet if we don’t change, if we don’t have social media regulation”, added the deputy.

The PT president stated that “the algorithm favors the type of conversation and intervention that gives rise to violence, hatred and prejudice” and that “those who treat people like this on the networks end up with the greatest engagement, because the networks aim to to profit.”

PT pays price for coalition, says Gleisi

The national president of the PT also stated that there is a process of “reconstruction” of the PT in the municipal elections. “It’s obvious that, having the Presidency of the Republic, there was an expectation that the PT would have greater numbers than it did,” said Gleisi.

“I would say it was more of an external expectation than an internal one, but there was that expectation”, acknowledged the deputy.

Gleisi added, however, that, for her, there is no relationship between the result of this election and the national elections. “This shows that having the federal government does not necessarily mean that you will have victories in municipal elections, just as having the majority of mayors in municipalities does not mean that you will be defeated in national elections”, he declared.

According to Gleisi, only the photograph of the 2024 election “does not include” an accurate analysis of what the challenges of the party are. Among the issues highlighted, she mentioned the growth of the far right.

“Yes, we are living in a cycle, a counterflow of right and extreme right in the country. Unlike what we were in the 1980s and 1990s, in which the left made a rise, the right is also doing this now. It’s an international factor”, he stated.

In an interview with GloboNews, this Monday (28), head of Secom highlighted that none of Jair Bolsonaro’s (PL) former ministers – Alexandre Ramagem, Marcelo Queiroga and Gilson Machado – were elected this year

Gleisi also stated that the PT “pays a price” in the municipal elections for the formation of a broad front in the federal government, admitting that the party had expectations of better results in this year’s vote.

The leader says that she sees the need for the PT and the left to have more protagonism in the municipalities, but considered that “it was never the strength” of this political field to win the majority of local elections.

“Although we have managed many municipalities, the truth is that we have a national project. But we need to pay attention to what needs to be improved, as a party and as a government”, he stated.

“It is important to emphasize that we are part of a coalition government. So, the PT also pays a price for this, because many allies at the national level are those who compete with us at the local level.”

Re-election

The PT president also highlighted the high rate of re-election, which makes the party see it as “natural” that the candidates who competed against PT members end up victorious.

The party elected 252 mayors, 69 more than in 2020, and 290 vice-mayors, 84 more than in the previous municipal election. In the second round, the PT contested elections in 13 municipalities and won in four: Fortaleza (CE), Camaçari (BA), Pelotas (RS) and Mauá (SP).

The highlight goes to the victory of Evandro Leitão (PT) in Fortaleza (CE), the only capital conquered by the party this year, and in 2020 the party had none. The party also elected 3,129 councilors, 466 more than in the last election.
