Lira demands investigation of explosions “urgently” and suspends activities in the Chamber
After the records of two explosions in Praça dos Três Poderes, on the night of this Wednesday (13), the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL)suspended all legislative and administrative activities in the legislative house until 12pm (Brasília time) on Thursday (14).
The movement comes after a request made by the vice-governor of the Federal District, Celina Leão (PP), who temporarily holds the position of head of the Executive Branch at the local level amid the absence of governor Ibaneis Rocha (MDB), who is in Italy.

She requested that both Lira and Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), president of the Federal Senate, wait for a complete sweep by the administration’s security forces so that they can safely resume the activities of the legislative houses.
In a decision distributed to parliamentarians and the press, Lira also determined that the responsible sectors of the Chamber of Deputies carry out, “with the utmost urgency”, a complete assessment of the damage caused and implement measures to restore the security and functionality of the facilities of the Chamber of Deputies. The parliamentarian also requested that the incident be forwarded for detailed investigation by the Legislative Police, “in order to determine the circumstances and responsibilities involved in the events”.
In a note distributed to the press, Lira said that the explosion of a car in a public parking lot close to Annex IV of the Chamber of Deputies, where most of the parliamentarians’ offices are located, “must be investigated with the necessary urgency to clarify all the its causes and circumstances.”
“I vehemently reaffirm my total repudiation of any act of violence”, concluded the parliamentarian in the text.
Both the Chamber of Deputies and the Federal Senate were in session in their respective plenaries at the time of the explosions, which interrupted work.
What is known about the case?
Two explosions were heard close to the “heart” of power in Brasília. At around 7:30 pm, a car with a Rio do Sul (SC) identification plate exploded in a parking lot near Annex VI of the Chamber.
Explosive materials and bricks were identified in the trunk. The owner would be Francisco Wanderley Luiz, who was a candidate for councilor for the PL in the 2020 municipal elections, but was not elected.
About 20 seconds after the first record, a man died in a second explosion near the Federal Supreme Court (STF). Until this report was updated, the body had not yet been removed, amid the risk of there being more explosive materials at the location.
According to vice-governor Celina Leão, the attacker tried to enter the Court building before the explosion. The relationship between the two incidents and the authorship was still unclear. The Federal Police opened an investigation to investigate the case.
