Lula sanctions law banning cell phones in schools

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sanctioned this Monday (13), the bill that bans cell phones in schools across the country.

Devices such as cell phones, tablets and smart watches are prohibited in public and private schools across the country during classes, recess and breaks, according to the new legislation, which covers all basic education – preschool, primary and secondary education.

The student can carry the device in their backpack; however, it can only be used in cases of guaranteeing accessibility, inclusion and fundamental rights, in addition to meeting health conditions.

ACCESS NOW

In the classroom, devices may only be used for strictly pedagogical or didactic purposes, under the guidance of teachers.

The use of the devices will also be authorized in situations of danger or force majeure.

Storage

During a closed ceremony at Palácio do Planalto to sanction the new law, the Minister of Education, Camilo Santana, explained that the storage location for devices while students are at school will be defined according to the capacity of each institution.

According to the new law, schools must warn students about the psychological distress caused by excessive screen use and train teachers to identify these behaviors.

In addition, institutions must also offer spaces to listen and welcome students with digital nomophobia, or fear of being away from their cell phones.
