Mayor among those killed in eastern Lebanon after Israeli bombing

Several people were injured in Saturday’s attack. Search and rescue teams look for victims under the rubble.

The Israel Defense Forces did not comment on the attack. Lebanese media also report Israeli attacks on the southern suburb of Beirut, a Hezbollah stronghold known as Dahiyeh. Israel asked Lebanese civilians to evacuate the area ahead of the airstrikes.

Since September 23, Israel has been bombing Hezbollah positions in Lebanon. The Shiite group opened an attack front after October 7 in support of Hamas. After weakening Hamas in Gaza, the Israeli army moved most of its military operations to the Lebanese front.

In almost a month, at least 1,373 people died in Lebanon. Data are from a count based on official reports. The UN states that there are around 700,000 displaced people.

More than 40 thousand dead in Gaza. At least 42,438 people died, most of them civilians, in the Israeli offensive in Gaza after the attack on October 7, 2023, according to data from the territory’s Ministry of Health, considered reliable by the UN.
