Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) filed a criminal complaint with the Federal Supreme Court (STF) against the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad. Minister André Mendonça will be the rapporteur of the case.

The son of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) calls for Haddad’s conviction for the crimes of slander, insult and defamation after being accused by him of committing fraud.

In a statement at Palácio do Planalto, last Wednesday (15), the Minister of Finance said that the senator “was caught” by the Federal Revenue Service and, therefore, was contrary to the new rules for monitoring financial transactions.

“Now Flávio Bolsonaro is complaining about the IRS. He cannot complain to the Revenue, he was caught by the Revenue. So, there is no point in these people who bought more than 100 properties with scratch money, they cannot be outraged by the serious work that the revenue department is doing”, said Haddad.

Flávio Bolsonaro classifies Haddad’s statements as “knowingly false” and claims that he is being targeted for political persecution. The senator mentioned that the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice had already rejected a complaint from the Public Ministry against him in 2020.

In the criminal complaint, Flávio argues that the minister’s statements are an abuse of power and an attempt to delegitimize his political work.

André Mendonça’s first step will be to request a statement from the Attorney General’s Office (PGR). If the PGR finds evidence of a crime, the case may be brought to trial in the Second Panel or in the Plenary of the Supreme Court, where Haddad may be considered a defendant or have the complaint rejected.

In addition to the action in the STF, Flávio Bolsonaro also sued Haddad in the Federal District Court, asking for compensation of R$60,000 for the statements.

The minister has not yet commented on the actions in court.
