Ruas obstruídas por barricadas improvisadas em Maputo; eleições têm motivado confrontos sangrentos e já deixaram um total de 248 mortos desde outubro

Frelimo has been in power since 1975, when Mozambique became independent and ceased to be a colony of Portugal.

The elections have led to bloody clashes and have left a total of 248 people dead since October. An American diplomatic spokesman cited by the AFP news agency spoke of an electoral “lack of transparency”.

On social media, Mondlane, who has been asking his supporters for peaceful protests, announced that he will proclaim himself president-elect on January 15th. He fled the country in October after the execution of his lawyer and a spokesman for another opposition party.

This Thursday (26/12), he accused security forces of encouraging disorder to allow the declaration of a state of emergency.

Chaos across the country

In Maputo, the country’s capital, protesters erected barricades and looted businesses and banks. Out of fear, many residents stayed at home during Christmas.
