At the center of the case is former operations director Mike Wainwright and three other directors, accused of the alleged corruption scheme that ran from 2009 to 2011. The trial is expected to run until December 20th and could mark a turning point in operations of Swiss authorities against companies based in the country.

The case that is now before the courts, however, began almost a decade ago and, in exchange for messages obtained exclusively by Facto Newsauthorities used unofficial channels to pass on information and suspicions about the actions of the company and its directors.

In a message exchange group, Swiss and Brazilian prosecutors maintained intense communication about each stage of the Operation Lava Jato process. The conversations took place for more than three years via the Telegram app and were not officially recorded.

One of the focuses of the investigation was the Swiss-based company, Trafigura.

On October 23, 2015, the topic was the subject of a meeting at the Swiss embassy in Brasília. At the meeting, a Bern government attaché identified only as Marco explains that “the Swiss authorities have received several complaints about Trafigura, which is a giant in the purchase and sale of Oil (it even sold to Petrobras), and is suspected of several crimes, such as corruption and the sale of illegal waste”.

“However, until now they have not been able to obtain any effective evidence in relation to the company”, he says.
