One person dies and 10 are hospitalized after E. coli infections linked to McDonald's sandwich

The specific ingredient linked to the infection has not yet been identified, but investigators are focusing on fresh sliced onions and beef burgers, the CDC said.

Forty-nine people from 10 states fell ill with the same strain of E. colithe CDC said. Most of the sick people are from Colorado or Nebraska.

“Initial investigation findings indicate that a subset of illnesses may be related to the sliced onions used in Quarterão and purchased from a single supplier serving three distribution centers,” said McDonald’s North America supply chain director, Cesar Piña, in a statement.

The company is temporarily removing the Quarterão from restaurants in the affected area, including Colorado, Kansas, Utah and Wyoming, McDonald’s added, saying it was working with suppliers to replenish stock next week.

The symptoms of E. coli include severe abdominal cramps, diarrhea and vomiting.

In 2015, burrito chain Chipotle faced a drop in sales and had its reputation damaged after outbreaks of E. coli in several US states.
