PSDB founder leaves party after disagreeing with support for Nunes: “Root Tucano”

One of the founders of the PSDB, Tião Farias left the party. The letter of disaffiliation was sent to the president of the party in São Paulo (SP), José Aníbal.

In a message to colleagues, Farias wrote that he is leaving the party but remains a “root tucano”. The PSDB said it regrets leaving.

According to Farias, the party’s departure is the result of “current directions and management choices”. PSDB’s support for Ricardo Nunes (MDB) in the second round of municipal elections is an example of this.

“The decision to support the current mayor, without properly consulting local authorities, makes me think that we are going to ‘sleep with the enemy’ and, in the case of his godfather, to use a classic analogy, we are going to hatch the ‘serpent’s egg’” , wrote Farias in reference to former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

Bolsonaro supported Nunes, and this rapprochement with a candidate supported by the extreme right bothered the founder of the party. “We never support candidates associated with Malufism/Bolsonarism. Historical coherence, in this case, would be neutrality, as it would be more aligned with our principles and would avoid contradictions with what the party has defended over the years”, he argued.

Still regarding support for Nunes, Tião Farias was bothered by the decision being taken without consulting the party’s São Paulo directory. “Of course, the party leadership has the right to take a position, but nothing justifies failing to inform our municipal president in advance – a basic gesture of political consideration”, he explained.

“His actions and speeches reveal traces of a fascist and coup project, something that directly contradicts our founding manifesto of 1988, which makes clear our primary commitment to defending democracy against any attempt at authoritarian regression”, continued Farias.

For the now former tucano, supporting the left in the elections would not deviate the party from its traditions. “We have already supported Lula in a second presidential round and also Marta Suplicy in a municipal election. In other words, if the objective was to mark a distinction, this narrative does not reflect our trajectory”, he says.

Finally, Farias reiterated that he is satisfied with the party he built. “I remain certain that our work was worth it and the legacy of our achievements will last forever,” he wrote.

Benedito Mascarenhas, general secretary of the São Paulo municipal directory of the PSDB, regretted his departure, but respected the decision. “He already had some dissatisfaction with the way the party was being led, especially at the national level”, he explains.

For Mascarenhas, Tião would be a key player in rebuilding the party. “Of course, he will continue with his tucan heart, but we will not have his figure, his person, the leadership he exercises with us at this moment”, he concludes.
