Senator calls for impeachment of Moraes: “Either the Senate stands up or there is no reason to exist”

When speaking in the Senate plenary, on Tuesday (8), the senator Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE) once again defended the impeachment of the minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes.

The parliamentarian stated that “either the Senate stands up or there is no reason to exist”.

Girão accused the minister of committing abuses, especially with regard to the investigation into fake news and the decisions on the prisoners accused of participating in the invasion of the headquarters of the Three Powers, on January 8, 2023.

The senator showed the audio of a girl who, according to him, is the daughter of one of the prisoners. In the recording, the child asks Alexandre de Moraes to release his father.

“Cruelty, injustice, disrespect for our Magna Carta have reached rock bottom,” said Girão. “Either the Senate stands up or there is no reason for any of us to be here, if the Senate does not fulfill its role of defending the Constitution. And the only one of the Powers that can do anything is the Federal Senate, which has the prerogative to investigate, to remove ministers from the Federal Supreme Court.”

In his speech, Girão also said that “Brazil emerged from the polls renewed, with a solid growth of conservative, right-wing forces”.

The senator also took stock of his campaign for mayor of Fortaleza – he finished in fifth place, with 14,878 votes (1.06%).

According to Girão, his campaign was “Franciscan” and he was a victim of political persecution promoted by the PT and “its satellites in the courts” — who, according to the parliamentarian, tried to prevent him from participating in debates between candidates.
