The ‘incredible finds’ of a time capsule opened after 500 years
The Netherlands is known for its wooden clogs and windmills. And even with all the work of archaeologists, to date, centuries-old records of only 45 shoes have been found. The last of them took place this year, in Alkmaar.
What happened
Excavation in a sanitary pit. Archaeologists were working at the site, which was estimated to be 500 years old, and found objects from the 16th century, including the clog and a grain meter.
The find was on the city’s main street. The experts were working on the land where a medieval house stood. For them, the discovery helps to reconstruct the history of the place and better understand how the population lived in that century.
