TSE: Ferreira votes to revoke Cláudio Castro’s mandate; score is 2×0

The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) formed a majority of votes to condemn the former governor of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro, to ineligibility, for abuse of political and economic power in his re-election campaign in 2022.

So far, the voting score is 4 votes to 1 for Castro’s conviction. The trial continues to take the votes of ministers André Mendonça and Cármen Lúcia, the last to be delivered.

Yesterday (23), the former governor resigned from his mandate and announced that he is a pre-candidate for the Senate in the October elections.

However, ministers are analyzing whether Castro could become ineligible until 2030 in case of conviction in the process.

The TSE judges an appeal by the Public Electoral Ministry (MPE) and the coalition of former deputy Marcelo Freixo (PSOL-RJ) to reverse the decision of the Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro (TRE-RJ) which, in May 2024, rejected the revocation of the mandate and acquitted the former governor and the other accused.

The process deals with alleged irregular hiring at the Rio de Janeiro State Center for Statistics, Research and Training of Public Servants Foundation (Ceperj) and at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (Uerj).
