Three agents are scheduled to shoot ammunition against him 4.5 meters away. This Friday at 6 pm local time (8 pm GMT), he will be arrested in a steel chair, with a hood over his head, while the guards aim at his heart in the South Carolina Correction Department.

Sigmon’s lawyers said he faced an impossible choice between ” barbaric methods ”. One of them, Gerald King, said in a press release that his client was at risk of a prolonged death with other alternatives and, therefore, ” chose the best he can ”.

Activists ask for mercy. Groups contrary to the death penalty made a vigil yesterday and delivered thousands of petitions signed to Governor Henry McMaster’s office, requesting him to interrupt the execution. So far, the suspension does not seem likely.

First execution by shooting in 15 years

Only three executions per shot platoon have been made in the US since 1976, all in Utah. Five American states currently authorize the method, they are: Idaho, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Utah.

People see the shooting as ” barbaric ”. To AP, Deborah Denno, a criminologist at Fordham Faculty of Law, explained that the bloody reality of these murders led states to resort from 1980 to lethal injection – a procedure seen as ” more human ”.
