USA: Luigi Mangione, suspected of killing CEO, pleads innocent to court

Luigi’s defense said it was “very concerned” about its client’s right to a fair trial. In court today, lawyer Karen Friedman Agnifilo pointed out that statements by authorities and politicians about the case could influence the trial. “This is a young man (…) He is being treated like a human ping-pong ball between two jurisdictions (state and federal) at war here.”

Agnifilo also accused federal and state authorities of treating Luigi as “political fodder” and a “spectacle”. She mentioned the client’s return to New York, by helicopter, and surrounded by authorities and armed guards, while being recorded by cameras from different broadcasters. The judge responded that he cannot control what happens outside the courtroom, but said the young man will receive a fair trial.

They (federal and state prosecutors) have conflicting theories in their charges and are literally treating him like he is some kind of spectacle. He was on display for all to see in the biggest staged criminal walk I’ve ever seen in my career. It was absolutely unnecessary. (…) He is not a symbol. He is someone who has the right to a fair trial. He is innocent until proven guilty.

Prosecutors claimed to have a significant volume of material with evidence. Including many hours of video from surveillance cameras that would link Luigi to the crime scene.

Luigi is currently in federal custody at the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center, after being transferred from Pennsylvania to New York amid tight security. His next court appearance is scheduled for February 21.

State and federal charges

In addition to state crimes, the young man is also the target of federal crime charges (at a national level) of interstate pursuit, murder and use of a firearm to commit murder. These charges, according to BBC International, could land him on death row while the state charges could sentence Luigi to life in prison without parole.
